Abd el-Kader ibn Muhieddine, born in the Regency of Algiers in 1808 and died in Syria on 23 May 1883, was an Algerian emir, religious and military leader who fought against the French occupation of Algeria. He defied the French armies from 1832 to 1847 before laying the foundations for a true Algerian state. His "smala", his mobile capital, was defeated in May 1843, before he surrendered in 1847 and was taken prisoner in France. Today, he is regarded as one of the most important figures in Algerian history. The nobility of his attitude after his capture and the highly effective protection he afforded the Christians of Damascus towards the end of his life also earned him great prestige among his former adversaries.
