According to the Musée du Jura website, Baron Gros commissioned Pointurier to make a copy of his painting.
We would like to thank Mrs Justine Seve-Brugnot, Director of Museums, Heritage and Archives for the town of Arbois, for providing us with this information: "The painting was produced in 1832, during Étienne-Charles Pointurier's short 'Parisian' period. The town of Dole, of which he was a native, had voted him a pension of 500 francs to enable him to attend the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. We don't know why he never got in (failed competitive examination?). Nevertheless, he took advantage of his time in Paris to copy the three great painters Gros, Gérard and Girodet. In 1833, he abandoned his Parisian ambitions to settle in Arbois and teach drawing there following the departure of Victor Huguenin".
Etienne-Charles Pointurier was a French portrait painter, lithographer and landscape artist.
