Lot no. 181
EUCLID (4th century BC). De gli elementi d'Euclide libri quindici. Urbino: Domenico Frisolino, 1575. A genuine, wide-margined copy of the first Italian translation of Euclid's Elements, edited by Federico Commandino (1509-1575). Illustrated with numerous woodcut diagrams, the work was conceived to make Euclid accessible to a non-Latinist readership. This rare edition printed in Urbino stands out for its scientific rigour and typographic elegance, and is considered one of the highest achievements of sixteenth-century Italian mathematical scholarship. Folio (312 x 220mm). Numerous figures and diagrams in the text, typographic vignette to title, text within a ruled border, wide margins (a few minor marginal dampstains toward the end, some tiny marginal wormholes, otherwise a genuine copy). Bound in cotemporary vellum, spine handsomely lettered and decorated in manuscript in a calligraphic hand, black edges (slightly worn). Provenance: 'Dr Zamboni' (early 20th-century ownership stamp to endpapers)
