Lot no. 1856
Eugen Bracht (1842 Morges - 1921 Darmstadt) Towering rock A study created in direct experience of nature, plein air, which masterfully depicts the rough, angular nature of the rock surface with a powerful, impasto style. Bracht, who was appointed to the Berlin Academy in 1882, was one of the most important German landscape painters at the end of the 19th century; in the 1890s he made a decisive turn towards Impressionism and from then on lent his landscapes a fresh, bright colouring, a pictorial arrangement emphasising the surface and a spontaneous, loose application of paint. Oil on canvas, mounted on card. Signed lower left; inscribed several times verso (biographical information). 31.1 cm x 23.3 cm. Frame. Oil on canvas, laid down on cardboard. Signed.
