EUGÈNE CORNEAU* (Vouzeron 1894 - 1976 Pontaubert) Window view of Petit Pont oil/canvas 46 x 38 cm signed E. Corneau ESTIMATE °€ 800 - € 1000 STARTING PRICE € 800 Louis Eugène Corneau exhibited for the first time in 1918. In 1920, he began to work as an engraver. In the same year he became a founding member of the group Jeune Peinture française (Young French Painting). He was also a Société des peintres-graveurs français (Society of French Painters-Engravers) and from 1924 the Société de l'estampe (Society of Printing). In 1925, he was awarded the Abd-e-Tif Prize and stayed at La Goulette with Albert Marquet. In 1931 and 1937, Corneau participated in the decoration of the great hall of honour of the Algerian pavilion in the Exposition Coloniale (Colonial Exhibition). In 1947, he became a member of the Comité national du livre (National Committee of the Book); In 1953, he was a member of the jury at the Salon d'automne (Autumn Salon). In 1962, the year Algeria gained independence from France, Corneau was appointed professor of engraving at the École des beaux-arts d'Alger (Algiers School of Fine Arts).
