A set of preparatory drawings for this ambitious composition was shown in the 1994-1995 exhibition (see Johnson, op. cit., nos. 75 to 83). This brush drawing is one of the rare sketches on blue paper by Delacroix. The brush sketch smoothly renders the main compositional lines of the group of figures.
