EURIPIDE. Î€ÏÎ±ÎłÏ‰ÎŽÎčαÎč ጑πταÎșαίΎΔÎșα. TragƓdiĂŠ septendecim. Venice, Aldus, February 1503. 2 volumes in-8, bradel stiff vellum, smooth spine, tawny title-pieces, blue edges (Pastiche binding). A rare and much sought-after editio princeps of Euripides' tragedies, in which fourteen of the nineteen surviving plays by the great Greek tragedian appear in their entirety for the first time. "This is the first edition of most of the plays it contains, eighteen in number, including the furious Hercules, which is not mentioned in the title, but which was added at the end of the second volume" (Brunet). Of these eighteen tragedies, four had previously been published in Florence around 1496: Medea, Hippolytus, Alcestis and Andromache. The nineteenth, Electra, does not appear in any edition published before 1545. The eighteen tragedies were printed in Greek and published without commentary. The Aldine anchor is printed on the verso of the colophon in each volume. The copy is well complete with its blank leaves (Δ4, ΗΗ6, ÎŁÎŁ10, ΄΄6). Handwritten bookplate of Giovanni Antonio Belisario (or Belisani), of Bologna, at the foot of the title (small holes caused by the pen). Handwritten annotations: a Latin elegiac poem in pen on the last page of Ion; a crossed-out note on the title of IphigĂ©nie en Aulide; a note on the verso of the last leaf. Small worm gallery at the corner of the first leaves of Hercules furieux; stains and repairs to the last three leaves. Adams, E-1030 - Ahmanson-Murphy, 55 - Renouard, 43:10 - Brunet, II, 1095.
