EUROPEAN STEEL HORSE SHAFFRON Ca. AD 1600 - 1700 A European steel shaffron. A shaffron is a piece of armour that protects a horse's head in battle. It is made of steel and shaped to fit over the horse's forehead. The steel surface of the shaffron is reinforced with protection for the animal's eyes and ears. A central geometric motif embellishes the front of the armour. There are three tubes on the front that allow for a plume attachment.
