Lot no. 119
Eusebi Planas i Franquesa (Barcelona, 1833–1897), Tomàs Padró i Pedret (Barcelona, 1840–1877), and Tomás Carlos Capuz Alonso (Valencia, 1834–Madrid, 1899) Set of eleven plates for engraving on boxwood. Accompanied by 10 engravings, paper proofs of the print run printed by Miquel i Planas, and two boxwood lithographic plates. Sheet dimensions: 22 x 14 cm. Plate dimensions: 13.3 x 9 cm. Lithographic plate measurements: 15.8 x 10.4 x 2.4 cm each. As reported by the Royal Academy of History in its article on the author, "Eusebi Planas can be considered the first modern Catalan illustrator of the 19th century. This means that he devoted himself entirely to his work as an illustrator of books and magazines, achieving not only great success among the reading public, but also great respect and admiration from his own publishers." With the career of illustrator as his professional goal since childhood, he achieved notable artistic and financial success in Paris and Barcelona. However, he made the decision to return to the United States after an outbreak of cholera in the French capital. His artistic career is marked by lithographs, illustrations for romantic novels, and erotic drawings, as “he was one of the few artists of his time who successfully cultivated erotic drawing, especially in the 1880s, many of which were confiscated from his studio by the police,” reports Pilar Vélez for the RAH.  His most emblematic illustrations include the large formats of "La Dame aux Camélias" (1880), "Histoire d'une Femme" (1880), and "Les Quatre Valets" (1881), which were already full of color due to the great development of chromolithography in the 1880s. To conclude, we reiterate the words of Pilar Vélez, Doctor of Art History: “Just as Paul Gavarni was the creator of the female image of romantic Paris, Planas, the prototype of the French dandy, was the illustrator of Barcelona society in the second half of the 19th century, its graphic chronicler par excellence.” Reference bibliography: - Vélez Vicente, Pilar.
