Excellent Four-Barreled Percussion Pistol Mariette Brevete Pepperbox with Original Case and Accessories, 19th Century. A superb example of a 19th-century multi-barrel percussion pistol, commonly referred to as a "pepperbox." This finely crafted pistol features four barrels arranged in a rotating cluster, each with clean rifled bores. The frame and barrel group are richly engraved with classic scrollwork, reflecting the fine craftsmanship of its time. The wooden grip is perfectly preserved with a glossy dark finish. The pistol is marked "Mariette Brevete", identifying it as the work of the famed Belgian gunsmith Gilles Mariette, whose innovations defined pepperbox design in the mid-19th century. The breech and barrel bear the Liege proof marks (ELG in oval with star), confirming its Belgian origin. The pistol is housed in its original fitted wooden case lined in green velvet, accompanied by a complete set of period accessories: a bullet mould, powder flask, percussion cap box, and a compartment with lead balls. All components are intact and arranged in precise compartments. The Pepperbox Mariette Brevete is a neat, compact weapon of good quality and was used for short-range shooting as a self-defence weapon. For its time, it was distinguished by a high rate of fire.
