Exceptional bed attributed to Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener (1849-1925)
Large bed in precious wood marquetry, richly decorated with carved and gilded wood and decorated with espagnolettes, central medallions decorated with paintings of gallant scenes. Late 19th century. Restoration due to use and maintenance. Headboard dimensions: H: 153; W: 170 cm. Footboard dimensions: H: 100; W: 170 cm. Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener was born in Germany in 1849. Between 1880 and 1895, he settled in Paris on rue de la Roquette. At the 1882 Exposition de l'Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, he was awarded the gold medal, which he also received at the 1889 Universal Exhibition for the richness and quality of his furniture. As soon as he was established, he specialised in reproducing crown furniture, such as the Louis XV desk by Jean-François Oeben and Jean-Henri Riesener. He established a reputation for producing Rocaille-style furniture, in particular that of King Louis XV. He is known for the quality of his bronzes, the purity of his lines and his meticulous marquetry. His work ranged from the Louis XIV style to the Louis X VI style, including transitional and Regency styles. In 1895, he sold his workshop to Jean-Henri Jansen (1854-1928) who worked under the name of "Zwiener Jansen Successeur". In the same year he returned to Berlin, where he completed a major commission for Frederick William II of Prussia. He took the name Julius Zwiener. This commission for the emperor was presented at the 1900 Universal Exhibition.
