In ebony, richly decorated in gilded brass marquetry with foliage, tendrils and scrolls, opening in front to two large leaves decorated with low relief figures of Socrates and Aspasia. Resting on a plinth with swivel feet. Restoration due to wear and maintenance. Late 19th century. Dimensions: H: 120; W: 131; D: 49 cm. Mathieu Befort known as Befort Jeune (1813-1880), cabinetmaker, son of the cabinetmaker Jean-Baptiste Befort (died in 1840). Established at 1 and 6, rue Neuve-Saint-Gilles in Paris from 1844 to 1880. Like his older brother Bernard, he specialised in making furniture in Boulle marquetry or rosewood with rich bronze decoration. His work was always of the highest quality, and he became the official supplier to Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie.
