AT THE TABLE OF HIS MAJESTY KING LOUIS-PHILIPPE IER
Maison Piguet is honoured to present an exceptional collection of over 1,300 pieces of porcelain, silverware and crystalware bearing the coat of arms of France that belonged to His Majesty King Louis-Philippe I and his descendants.
The Sèvres porcelain service known as the "Service des Princes" comprises 480 pieces, and the Christofle menagère includes more than 630 pieces, mostly bearing the French coat of arms and marked with the seal of the Château d'Eu. In addition, there are more than 230 pieces of a crystal service attributed to Baccarat bearing the Orléans coat of arms surmounted by the crown of the sons of France girded with the collars of the King's orders.
The ensemble is of remarkable quality and consistency. It came from Louis-Philippe, King of the French, and his descendants. These services illustrate both the elegance of royal and princely daily life and the refined taste that characterised the Orléans dynasty in the 19th century.
The goldsmiths' and silversmiths' services naturally found their place at the Château d'Eu in Normandy, King Louis-Philippe's country residence and the very heart of Orléans family life. Inherited from the Dukes of Penthièvre, the château became a holiday and reception venue under the July monarchy, where the art of living of the Court was on display. They accompanied meals and official ceremonies, helping to showcase the Sovereign's prestige.
The Château d'Eu also hosted major diplomatic events, including the visits of Queen Victoria in 1843 and 1845, symbols of Franco-British friendship. As privileged witnesses of this era, these lots embody the measured splendour, tradition and enlightened refinement of the House of Orléans.
It is extremely rare to find such a complete service in such an exceptional state of preservation. The set has been kept in a Swiss collection for over 50 years.
Lots 8 to 10 will go on sale in the auction room on Wednesday 10 December 2025 at 6pm.
The auction of lots 1250 and 1251 (Christofle) and lots 1385 to 1398 (Service des Princes) will end on Monday 8 December at 12 noon. See page 100.
Service des Princes
Commissioned between 1834 and 1846 for the various royal residences of Louis-Philippe, the Service des Princes is one of the most remarkable sets produced by the Royal Sèvres Manufactory during the July Monarchy. Intended for everyday, semi-official use by the royal family in the sovereign's residences, it is distinguished from the so-called ceremonial services by its uniform decoration, identical for all the châteaux. This choice reflects Louis-Philippe's desire to unify the living environment of his family in a spirit of continuity, modernity and royal simplicity.
The pieces associated with the Château d'Eu are distinguished by their privileged royal provenance: as Louis-Philippe's favourite residence and as part of his private estate, the Château occupied a central place in the sovereign's domestic and political life. The service was used in particular during the visits of Queen Victoria in 1843 and 1845, which epitomised the diplomatic rapprochement between France and England that Louis-Philippe had wanted. Following the 1848 Revolution, a large part of the Eu service accompanied the royal family in exile in England, where these porcelains continued to adorn the table of the King of the French and his descendants for several generations, perpetuating the memory of an enlightened and domestic monarchy. Created by the finest gilders at the Manufacture de Sèvres, the Service des Princes combines decorative elegance with symbolic coherence, illustrating Louis-Philippe's measured, modern taste. Now scattered between public and private collections, these porcelains remain a major testament to French royal refinement in the XIXᵉ century.
