Paris, Jacques Le Febvre, 1688. 2 volumes in one in-12, speckled calf, spine decorated, spotted edges (period binding). Second French edition of this great classic of pirate books, providing unrivalled information on the customs and exploits of the freebooters of Santo Domingo and Turtle Island. This autobiographical work by Exquemelin, a freebooter born in Honfleur, first appeared in Dutch in 1678 and was not published in French until 1686. It is followed in this edition by a report on the Establishment of a Chamber of Accounts in the West Indies. The illustration consists of a title-frontispiece engraved by Gaspar Bouttats and three folded maps. From the library of Ditton Park, with armorial bookplate and handwritten notes (duplicate). This Buckinghamshire estate had been the fief of Lord Montagu (1638-1709) since 1688. Copy of the writer Pierre Mac Orlan (1882-1970), with his ex-libris stamp at Saint-Cyr-sur-Morin. Spine rebound.
