Fabian de LA ROSA (Paco, Manila, 1869 - Quiapo, Manila, 1937) Portrait of a man with a hat Canvas Portrait of a gentleman wearing a hat, canvas, by F. de La Rosa 29.13 x 18.90 in. 74.0 x 48.0 cm Fabian de la Rosa was the most important Filipino painter at the turn of the 1900s. He learned the rudiments of the trade from his aunt Mariana de la Rosa, before continuing his apprenticeship with Simon Flores. At the age of 22, he made a name for himself with a portrait of a woman, La Perla de Lucban. Two years later, he joined the Escuela Superior de Pintura under Don Lorenzo Rocha (1837-1898). He then frequented other workshops in Quiapo, Santa Cruz and Manila, where he drew new inspiration from Lorenzo Guerrero and Miguel Zaragoza. In April 1898, the collapse of the Spanish regime following the Second Revolution prevented him from studying in Madrid. In 1900, he married Gorgonia Tolentino and they took in their orphaned nephews at home. In 1904, he won his first gold medal for Planting Rice at the St. Louis Exhibition. A second opportunity to go to Europe arose in 1908, when the School of Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines was founded. De la Rosa received a scholarship from the Germinal cigar factory, which enabled him to attend the Académie Julian in Paris and then the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. Returning to his native city in 1910, he became a teacher at the Manila School of Fine Arts and then its director from 1927 to 1937. Our painting is dated 1910, just after he returned from his first trip to Europe. The limited range of colours recalls the refined elegance of Whistler or Jacques-Emile Blanche, and the framing is inspired by certain Degas paintings. The model is reminiscent of the boy in Manet's Déjeuner dans l'atelier (1868, Neue Pinakothek, Munich), wearing a straw hat. Our model is holding a Panama hat, a symbol of elegance that was fashionable at the beginning of the 20th century.
