FALDA (Giovanni Battista) and Alessandro SPECCHI. Il Nuovo Teatro delle fabriche et edifici in prospettiva di Roma moderna. Rome, G. J. Rossi [then] D. Rossi, 1665-1699. [Followed by:] FALDA (Giovanni Battista). Le Fontane di Roma nelle piazze, e luoghi publici della città, con le lore prospetti, come sono al presente. Libro Primo. Rome, G. G. de Rossi, 1691. [Followed by:] PICCIONI (Matteo). Bassi rilievi antichi nell'arco di Constantino (?). Rome, G. G. de Rossi, n.d. 3 works in 6 suites in an oblong folio volume, spotted brown calf, spine decorated, red edges (18th century binding). Collection of three works published in Rome by the Rossi family, with a total of 196 engravings.
It opens with Il Nuovo Teatro delle fabriche, a work containing 142 views of Rome in the 17th century, giving an accurate idea of Roman buildings under the pontificates of Alexander VIII, Clement IX and Innocent XII. They are divided as follows: I-II. Piazze and Strade (35 and 17 plates); III. Chiese di Roma (38 plates); IV. Palazzi (52 plates), each with an engraved title and dedication.
The first three books were designed and engraved by G. B. Falda and the fourth by Alessandro Specchi, under the direction of the print publisher Giovanni Jacomo Rossi and, in the case of the latter, his heir Domenico Rossi. Without the fifth book, published much later, in 1739, by G. D. Campiglia.
The collection then contains two suites of engravings: the first part of the Fontane di Roma by G. B. Falda, containing 33 plates, including the title and dedication; and Bassi rilievi antichi nell'arco di Constantino by Matteo Piccioni, containing a dedication and 20 engraved plates (without the title), describing the bas-reliefs of the Arch of Constantine in Rome.
Binding rubbed and worn, jaws cracked, headbands missing, corners dull, some foxing, title of last suite missing.
