A Louis XVI carved mahogany revolving armchair
This rare desk armchair was certainly commissioned to match a desk, as conceived by Montigny or Garnier, both of whom promoted a return to Antiquity.
It is interesting to note that the belt decorated with posts, like the resolutely architectural tapered fluted legs that characterise our example, can be found in a series of chair designs produced by the Marquis de Marigny for his Parisian town house (cf. S. Eriksen, Early Neoclassicism in France, Faber & Faber, London, 1974, pl. 495-496).
