The gentleman’s portrait is signed. Joaquín González de la Pezuela (1761-1830), nobleman, military officer, Spanish politician and I Marquess of Viluma. In this magnificent portrait he is depicted with various books. One of them mentions the Battle of Viluma (Sipe-Sipe), a battle which he won as commander of the Royal Army on the 29th November 1815 and which occurred during the Campaign of Upper Peru in the Argentine War of Independence, waged between the royalist army and the United Provinces of Río de la Plata forces, led by General José Rondeau, which were defeated. A year later, Joaquín González de la Pezuela was named thirty-ninth viceroy of Peru, and remained in the position from 7th July 1816 to 29th January 1821. The Marquisate of Viluma is a Spanish aristocratic title created by King Ferdinand in commemoration of the victory at the Battle of Sipe-Sipe or Battle of Viluma, which occurred on the 29th November 1815, during the Third auxiliary expedition to Upper Peru, within the Spanish American wars of independence, in which general Joaquín de la Pezuela was victorious. He was also promoted to lieutenant general and named 39th Viceroy of Peru. Carved and gilded wooden frame crowned with the subjects’ coats of arms in carved and polychromed wood.
