FÉLIBIEN (Michel). History of the city of Paris. Paris, Guillaume Desprez et Jean Desessartz, 1725. 5 volumes in-folio, brown spotted calf, spine decorated, spotted edges (period binding). First edition of this monumental historical study of the city of Paris, begun by the Benedictine monk Michel Félibien (1665-1719) and completed by his colleague Guy Alexis Lobineau (1667-1727). Preceded by a Dissertation on the origin of the Hostel-de-Ville de Paris, it consists of a history and description of Paris, contained in the first two volumes, and a large number of supporting documents, collected in the following three volumes. The illustrations include a large plan of Paris engraved by Coquart, here in two leaves, and 32 out-of-text figures (24 of which are double-page) of plans and views of monuments engraved on copper by Lucas, Aveline, Duperons, Chaufourie, Hérisset and Sanry. The edition is also decorated with a fine allegorical frontispiece engraved in intaglio by Simonneau fils after Hallé and 3 vignettes by Cochin and Simonneau. Minor spotting and minor leather damage to boards, three jaws split, two small snags to headpieces.
