Lot no. 1609
Félix Saturnin Brissot de Warville (1818 Véron - 1892 Versailles)
Stable interior
A maid carefully fills the feeding trough with fresh hay and is watched expectantly by the sheep around her. In the foreground, two chickens are pecking grains, while two sheep lie nestled close together on the straw. Brissot, who studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and was trained by Léon Coignet, used effective lighting to create an atmospheric, sensitively depicted and thus representative stable scene. From 1840 he exhibited at the Paris Salon, where he was particularly praised for his subtly observed flocks of sheep and pastoral scenes. Oil on canvas, relined. Signed lower left; gallery label verso. 43.5 cm x 61.5 cm. Frame.
Provenance: Kunsthaus Bühler, Stuttgart.
