"Vallotton is above all a painter of nudes" (George Besson, 1955) This statement epitomises the widespread opinion that prevailed during the artist's lifetime. Around 1910, Vallotton achieved great fame in particular for his nudes, which were highly prized by collectors, while they sometimes provoked mixed reactions from critics. His female nudes move in a fascinating field of tension between the modern expression of sensuality and the impression of artificiality, coldness and distance. Vallotton deliberately focuses on composition, colour and the play of light and shadow. With his idealised depictions of female figures, he decisively departs from the traditional view of contemporary women. The aesthetic appeal of his nudes is based less on sheer nudity and more on the elegant, almost sinuous poses and gestures. This creates an unapproachable, sometimes unfathomable and captivating tension between the viewer and the figures depicted.
