In September 1913, Félix Vallotton spent several weeks in Perugia with his wife Gabrielle. During their stay they produced a total of eight paintings, including the present work with the view of Santa Maria Nuova. During this time, Vallotton was greatly inspired by the Italian landscape, which offered him a new palette of colours and a variety of lighting moods. The rolling hills and striking architecture of the region find expression in his paintings. The painting "Santa Maria Nuova, Pérouse" is not only a homage to the landscape, but also an example of Vallotton's artistic development, in which he permeates reality with his subjective perception.
