Provenance: Private collection, Belgium
A regular at the Salon and a keen traveller, the painter Félix Ziem specialised in views of Mediterranean cities such as Venice and Constantinople. He took advantage of his sojourns to capture landscapes on the spot, building up a repertoire of views that he used and multiplied in his compositions in his Paris studio. Our painting, Effet de lumière au couchant sur le Bosphore, Constantinople, is one of his many variations on the Ottoman capital, so dear to his heart.
An original, unclassifiable painter, he prefigured the Impressionists and remained impervious to the avant-garde. His compositions are marked by a great expressive power, with light touches and a vaporous atmosphere, constituting a skilful blend between Jongkind and Turner. Félix Ziem proposed a completely different approach to Orientalist painting, one that no longer focused on figures but was more interested in atmospheric variations and the dialogue between sky and water that was so particular to these regions. Characters and architecture are allusive, giving priority to the effects of the light of the setting sun on the water of the Bosphorus.
The Association Félix Ziem, represented by Mathias Ary Jan, Gérard Fabre and David Pluskwa, has confirmed the authenticity of this work. A certificate bearing number 324/0225 dated 18/02/2025 will be given to the buyer.
