FEMALE RELIC BUST Late Gothic, probably Rhenish, 14th century. Lime carved in the round, polychrome painted and with traces of gilding. Female bust with symmetrically parted hair and a headdress with a veil, a robe with high collar, and a four-pass opening in the center at the bottom. At the bottom of the base is a difficult-to-read, probably Austrian customs stamp. H 27.5 cm. Paintwork incomplete. Wormholes. Cracks and small losses. Tuft of hair below the hood probably supplemented. Comparable relic busts were part of the Figdor Collection in Vienna: see Die Sammlung Dr. Albert Figdor, Erster Teil, Vierter Band, Vienna 1930, plates No. 158 and 159.
