Lot no. 246
[FEMMES]. Disputatio perjucunda, qua anonymus probare nititur mulieres homines non esse : cui opposita est Simonis Gedicci defensio sexus muliebris. The Hague, J. Burchorn, 1644. Small in-12, red morocco, triple fillet, smooth spine grotesquely decorated, inner lace, gilt edges (18th century binding). Rare edition of this curious anonymous essay, sometimes attributed to Valens Acidalius. It is a "playful treatise directed against theologians who, in their glosses, misuse quotations from the Bible. The author uses this method to demonstrate that women are not part of the human species" (Gay). This is followed by a very serious rebuttal by the Lutheran theologian Simon Gedik.
A very fine copy in red morocco with grotesque decoration.
From the Noé de Salvert library (1845-1909), with bookplate.
Gay-Lemonnyer, II, 6 - Debure, n°4000 - Brunet, II, 759.
