An important atlas of the fortified towns of Europe comprising 152 (out of 196) intaglio plates. This atlas, known as Les Forces de l'Europe, appeared in eight issues between 1690 and 1695. Introduction à la fortification is the title of the first issue, dedicated to Monseigneur le Duc de Bourgogne. It consists of a title-frontispiece (dated 1693) and 9 teaching plates, with explanations printed alongside the engraving or on a separate sheet. The second part comprises 142 plans of fortified towns, arranged in alphabetical order from Antwerp to Wismar. A choice copy in contemporary red morocco. Binding a little rubbed, splintering on the first cover, some foxing and slightly foxed plates.
