Lot no. 103
Fernand LÉGER (1881-1955) "Liberté J'écris Ton Nom" Very rare first edition of this very large stencil measuring 31.8 x 127.8 cm, copy 37/200 and dedicated to Sandro VOLTA. Printed on heavy Auvergne vellum by Imprimerie Union in Paris. Good condition. In 1942, under the German occupation, Paul Éluard (1895-1952) wrote the poem "Liberté", which quickly became the emblem of the Resistance. A year after the death of his friend, Fernand Léger paid tribute to him by decorating his famous poem. On Paul Éluard's pensive face, streaked with green, blue, yellow and red, painted on canvas by Fernand Léger in 1947, he added the words "Liberté, j'écris Ton Nom" (Freedom, I write your name), which opened the painter's vision to the poet who had died the previous year. It is presented in an accordion book of several leaves that Pierre Seghers (1906-1987), the poet, publisher and Resistance fighter, printed the year of its creation using the stencil technique. Sandro VOLTA (1900-1986), writer, journalist and art collector, part of whose collection was sold by Maître Rheims at Drouot in 1957. He wrote the preface to the "Manifesto of Dadaism" by Tristan Tzara, his best friend. He brought his son Pablo (1926-2011), a photographer at Cinecittà, and his wife Ornella (1927-2021), Federico Fellini's assistant director, to Paris to photograph his writer and artist friends in their studios.
