FERRARA, Francesco (1767-1850). Memorie sopra il lago Naftia nella Sicilia meridionale, sopra l'ambra siciliana, sopra il melo ibleo e la città d'Ibla Megara, sopra Nasso e Callipoli. Palermo: Reale Stamperia, 1804.
Rare first edition in contemporary wrappers, with a single recorded auction appearance (RBH), of this work collecting four essays on naturalistic and archaeological curiosities. The second describes the features and origins of Sicilian amber, including chemical and physical experiments. The third, written for Spallanzani, discusses the honey of southeastern Sicily and beekeeping practices, with details on the flora of the Hyblaean Mountains and their pollination mechanisms. The final essay addresses the archaeology of Naxos and Callipoli, two ancient Greek settlements in Sicily.
