Lot no. 129
BISCUIT FIGURE, VINOVO MANUFACTORY, GIOANETTI PERIOD, 1780-1815
depicting the Immaculate Conception with Child; little wear, some minor restoration, two fingers missing
H. cm 43, W. cm 18.5
A VINOVO BISCUIT FIGURE, 1780-1815; SLIGHTLY WORN, SOME MINOR RESTORATIONS, TWO FINGERS MISSING
The large biscuit illustrated is part of the best plastic production of the manufactory (see note to the previous lot) and is also a technical challenge considering its considerable size, over forty centimetres. The group must have been highly appreciated: we know, in addition to our biscuit, of a second example published in 1973 by Brosio (op. cit., tables CXCIII and CXCIV) then on the antiques market, signed by Lomello and dated 1807, while a third figure is in d'Agliano, Maritano (op. cit. 2015, card 195, p. 211). Critics attribute the sacred production of the Piedmontese manufactory to Giovanni Lomello, also the author of this figure (L. Melegati, in AA.VV., Porcellane italiane europee ed orientali. Museo Gianetti, Milan 2000, card 106, p. 214).
