Lot no. 8
[FIGURES FROM THE BIBLE]. Taferelen der voornaamste geschiedenissen van het Oude en Nieuwe Testament. The Hague, Pieter De Hondt, 1728. 3 volumes in-folio, porphyry calf, double framed with a roulette of musicians and animals and a double fillet, closed crowns and fleurons at the corners, large diamond medallion in the centre, ornate spine, roulette on the edges, speckled edges (Dutch binding of the time). One of the most beautiful illustrated books of the early eighteenth century, known as "Pierre de Hondt's Bible". It features 212 magnificent plates, including 29 double-page plates, engraved with etching and burin after compositions by Gerard Hoet, Arnold Houbraken and Bernard Picart, with captions in Hebrew, Latin, English, French, German and Dutch, plus two frontispieces and two engraved dedications. These engravings, executed between 1705 and 1720, appeared separately before being inserted in the discourses of the Huguenot pastor Jacques Saurin (1677-1730), which were published in French and Dutch in Amsterdam in 1728-1739. A very fine copy printed on medium paper in luxurious contemporary Dutch bindings. It comes from the Château de Chaintré, in Saône-et-Loire, according to a handwritten note. One cap missing in vol. III; one leaf of text repaired in vol. I (pp. 101-102). Brunet, V, 150.
