Filippo Tagliolini, Triumph of Bacchus and Silenus, large bisque group
Filippo Tagliolini
(Fogliano di Cascia 1745 - Naples 1809)
TRIUMPH OF BACCHUS AND SILENUS
Large bisque group modelled on two levels. In the upper register, resting on a moulded plinth placed on a partial altar on which hangs a panther skin, Bacchus, crowned with vine leaves, holds a bunch of grapes with his left hand raised to the sky and with his right holding a cup, and next to him Silenus, who holds a flask in his left hand and rests his right hand on his shoulders. In the lower register three free-standing figures of a dancing faun, a Dionysian priest and a bacchante with a panther resting on her hind legs. In the Nota de' prezzi drawn up by Filippo Tagliolini in 1805, a 'Triumph of Bacchus and Silenus' appears among the large groups, costing twenty-six ducats, a clear reference to the group presented here, of which three other examples are known to be in the Capodimonte Museum (inv. nos. 1065, 5204 and 6365) and two in the Museo di San Martino in Naples (inv. nos. 557 and 559); 61x39x33 cm
