Lot no. 291
Fin de Siecle
Heinrich Vogeler
In May. 1897. etching and aquatint on wove paper. 31.5 x 22.5 cm (42 x 31 cm). Signed and monogrammed on plate and signed by printer Otto Felsing. With beetle remarque in lower margin. Framed under passepartout and behind glass.
Rief 16 II b (of II d). - The etching "Im Mai" by Heinrich Vogler is in the tradition of late German Romanticism and Naturalism, but also exhibits Impressionist elements, particularly in the loose lines and the emphasis on the light. In the idyllic spring scene depicted, the fresh green of the trees and the blossoming nature are captured in filigree lines and fine tonal gradations. Vogler masterfully succeeds in creating a lively atmosphere with subtle contrasts of light and dark, making the lightness and renewal of spring tangible. - Sheet slightly browned due to its age and with partial stains on the verso. Very good overall. Splendid impression of the extremely detailed, finely worked composition.
