Oil painting on slate depicting the crucifixion
Despite its small size and much narrower field, there is a clear reference in this painting to the large Crucifixion (1565) by Tintoretto, a canvas in the Scuola di San Rocco in Venice.
On Golgotha, Christ is already hoisted up on the cross, while the two thieves are about to receive the same torment: in the foreground, in contrast to the excitement of the gendarmes, there is the very human reaction of the Virgin, who faints before the vision of her crucified son.
