Gr. in-4 (36,5 × 28,3 cm), brown calf with extensive decoration painted in red, incised and enhanced with gilt metal staples, title in gilt staples in the centre of the upper board, smooth mute spine, interior framed with multiple fillets, lining and endpapers painted in watercolour and enhanced with gold, covers and spine preserved, gilt edges, folder and slipcase (Louise-Denise Germain). Edition decorated with 40 compositions by George Barbier, wood-engraved in colour by François-Louis Schmied, including the cover and 12 full-page illustrations. Limited edition of 150 numbered copies on Hollande wove paper (no. 48), signed in the justification by George Barbier. The painted endpapers are possibly by Josef Šíma, who collaborated with Louise-Denise Germain but did not sign his work. The binding, listed in the catalogue of the exhibition at the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal in 2017, was not only not exhibited on that occasion, but it is also stated that there was "no information on the binding". "One of the best productions by Barbier and Schmied, who engraved superbly" (Carteret). Superb decorated binding by Louise-Denise Germain, in keeping with the spirit of the book. "Miss Germain's bindings are of a very personal and tasty art, without seeking inspiration in the past, nor borrowing from anyone, without having undergone the influences of the time and the phases of fashion, nor having allowed herself to be impressed by modern techniques.
