Lot no. 2722
Flemish ivory carver (active 2nd half of the 17th century)
Relief panel with crucifixion in a small display case
Carved ivory. High rectangular. The creator of this devotional image utilised the material of the ivory panels with technical and artistic virtuosity to create a masterfully detailed, multi-figured, scenic depiction of extraordinary spatial depth. The crucifixion shows Christ and the two thieves on the cross, below them the figure of Mary, which is exaggerated in its proportions, Mary Magdalene kneeling with a jar of ointment and John and one of the other Marys, behind them Roman soldiers, two of them on horseback. Magnificent, three-sided glazed display case made of gilded, carved wood in the Baroque style. Relief panel 22 cm x 11 cm; display case approx. 47 cm x 27.5 cm x 14.5 cm.
CITES certificate available.
