Inherited from stories of antiquity - in which Locustus, the famous poisoner at Nero's court, concealed venom - they proliferated during the Renaissance, under the Tudors and the Medicis, before reaching their apogee in the 18th century. Double-bottomed medallions, bezel rings and Baroque pendants became miniature theatres of mystery and confidence, housing poisons, relics, portraits, perfumes and locks of hair: all secrets that intimacy and ornament knew how to conceal.
