Lot no. 1062
FOUR PLAQUES IN RELIEF WITH APOSTLES
Italy, 15th century.
Copper, embossed and gilt. Busts of four apostles with their attributes on a background decorated with lozenges, frames (in part, incomplete). Saint Peter with the Keys of Heaven at the top right and Bartholomew holding a knife at the bottom left. Verso backed with later brass sheet, inscribed C.H.Z 1099 (possibly from the Hohenzollern Collection?). Two plaques with cracks.
17.5 × 20.5 cm.
Cracks in the region of the halos of two plaques. With repairs in some areas. Some frame strips missing. Slightly warped. Losses.
Provenance:
- Auction Galerie Jürg Stuker, Berne, 23 November 1978, Lot No. 3228.
- By inheritance, in a Swiss private collection.
A stylistically very similar apostle plaque on a lozenge-decorated background from the former Collection of Erich Lederer (1896–1985), who died in Geneva, can be found in the MET New York (Inv. No. 1986.319.75). The frame is no longer present on the MET plaque. The discoloration around the edges suggests that, like the plaques on offer, it was once framed.
