FRAGMENT OF THE EMPEROR'S TOMB AT THE INVALIDES In red quartzite. H. 1.3 cm - W. 4.7 cm - D. 2.9 cm B.E. A small oval medal to hang in half round. Obverse: the death mask of the Emperor "Napoleon Emperor". Reverse: "Mort à Sainte Hélène le 5 mai 1821 - Rendu à la France le 30 9bre 1840". 2.5 x 1.7 cm T.T.B. Return of the Ashes period. Provenance : Former Napoleonic collection of the Prince's Palace of Monaco (3rd sale, lot 216) A fragment of the Emperor's tomb at Les Invalides, in red quartzite ; together with a medalion Commentary: Contrary to popular belief, the Emperor's tomb is not made of porphyry but of very similar red quartzite, imported from Finland.
