Deluxe copy enriched with an original watercolour and bound in a splendid Art Nouveau binding by the Riviere workshop. One of the most renowned novels by Anatole France, here illustrated by Georges-Antoine Rochegrosse (1859-1938), a Symbolist painter and collaborator of authors such as Flaubert and Hugo. 4to (250 x 185mm). Copy no. 9 of the deluxe edition of 65 copies, from a total print run of 1900, printed on Japon impérial paper. Includes an original watercolour by the artist and 15 etchings in triple state by Georges Rochegrosse, engraved by E. Decisy. Binding signed 'Riviere and Son for A.L. Isaacs' in dark brown morocco, richly gilt with Greek key motif on covers and spines, enhanced with green leather inlays. Turn-ins in morocco with gilt border, gilt edges. Provenance: ownership inscription 'A. T. Dearden 1930' to endpapers. (1)
