Paris, Alphonse Lemerre, 1876; in-12, [4]-ii-182-[2] pp, contemporary binding in navy blue half-chagrin, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fillets, gilt head, untrimmed, cover. First edition of Anatole France's second book after a collection of poems. Autograph signed letter from the author: Au cher poëte Catulle Mendès. The copy is enriched with 2 autograph letters on headed paper "Sénat - Palais national du Luxembourg" (France was a clerk in the Senate library) addressed to the same author: "My dear Catulle, My determination is not what I would have liked it to be. (...) It is beyond my strength to write two critical articles a month. I'd give in. Then there is a novel that I want to finish..."; "My dear poet, Calmann Lévy only gave me today the letter and the beautiful volume that you sent to Gérôme...".
