FRANCE / CAPETIANS - FRANCE / ROYAL François I (1515-1547). Gold shield with sun, 9th type, 3rd issue ND (after 1519), G, Genoa ? Av + FRANCISCVS- DEI- GRATIA- FRANCO- REX. Shield of France crowned under a sun and accosted by a lily and a G (roman). Rv. + XPS* VINCIT* XPS* REGNAT* XPS* IMPERA. Cross fleurdelisé between two lilies and two crowned F. Dy.780A - G.319A (R4) - Kind/BnF 1040 v. - Barbier-Mueller 61.3 - Fr.335 v.; Gold - 3.39 g - 27 mm - 5 h Top Pop: this is the only graded example! PCGS MS63 (55936817). The strike is slightly trefoil on the right-hand side but vigorous and clean on a fairly wide flank. Beautiful golden patina. Superb / Superbe à Fleur de coin. This specimen shows a variety of obverse corner with a roman G, and punctuation by a dot and GRATIA legend. The reverse is punctuated by small stars. A second known example of this variety shows punctuation by dots in the Barbier-Mueller collection n° 61.3. This obverse corner will then be reused, after modification by adding a small C under the roman G (Dy.780B): the type will be reclassified in the next edition of Gadoury royales, Louis XI à Henri IV (to be published).
