Upright head of the King with short hair; below (date). Rv. .CHRS. - .REGN. - .VINC. - .IMP (different). Cross formed of four crowned lilies, with (workshop) within a circle in heart, surmounted by a hand of justice and a sceptre in saltire. Dy.1446A - G.254 - Clairand not seen - Fr.439 ; Gold - 6.66 g - 25.5 mm - 6 h Top Pop: this is the only graded example! From the Valenciennes Treasure, or the treasure of the munitions dealer Mahieu in Valenciennes. Discovered in 1949, it is known as the largest French coin treasure, with around 2,800 gold coins and 6,000 silver coins, a sum corresponding to the weekly needs of several regiments during the Malplaquet campaign in 1709. NGC TO 53 (8583599-030). Reformation on one louis to the shield, at least. The fields barely rubbed. With a light golden patina on the original gloss. Rare vintage not seen by Clairand (CGB 2023). Superb.
