After the battle of Oudenaarde, Lille was at the mercy of the Imperials sent by Emperor Joseph I. Boufflers arrived just in time to defend the town with 15,000 men. The confrontation took place on the Wattignies plain, and the French were routed on 22 October 1708. Boufflers and 8,000 survivors capitulated on 28 October.
