Medallion, Louis XIV, Treaties of Peace of Nijmegen and nickname of "Louis the Great" (and Father of the Fatherland), by Francesco Bertinet 1679, Paris. Av. *LVDOVICVS* MAGNVS* FR* ET* NAVAR* REX* PP* / Bertinet sculp 1679 (legend treated with dotted background), within a laurel wreath. Half-body bust on the left of Louis XIV wearing the large wig, laurelled, draped and cuirassed, with the scarf floating behind the bust. Rv. VIDETE. OPERA. DNI. QVÆ. POSVIT. PRODIGIA. SVPER. TERRA. AVFERENS. BELLA. Ps 45/ Bertinet in et sculp 1679, within a laurel wreath. In the centre, ORTVS EST SOL / ET CONGREGATI SVNT Ps 103; below (legend treated with a dotted background): PROBAVERVNT. ET. VIDERVNT Ps 94. In radiating clouds, bust on the right of Louis XIV sowing branches of laurel on a landscape decorated with animals, lions, eagles and the Hydra of Lerna with part of the heads torn off. Medallion in its original condition, consisting of two single-sided parts, the bimetallic reverse with the copper centre, joined by a hoop topped by a screwed clasp holding the whole together. Extremely rare document. Superb. The legend on the reverse is taken from Psalms 45:9-10: "Venite, et videte opera Domini, quae posuit prodigia super terram, auferens bella usque ad finem terrae" [Come, and see the works of the Lord, who has set wonders on the earth, suppressing wars to the ends of the earth]. Also Psalm 103:22 "Ortus est sol, et congregati sunt" [The sun appeared, and they gathered]. Finally Psalm 94:9 "Probaverunt me, et viderunt opera mea" [They have tried me, and have seen my works]. This medallion is described in Ménestrier: Le Sr Bertinet fait ce médaillon pour la Paix [Traités de paix de Nimègue], & le proposé pour prix à celui qui fairoit le plus beau Sonnet à la gloire du Roy. It depicts the Sun dispelling the fog and driving away the night birds and monsters. For the Peace Treaties of Nijmegen, this congress marked the apogee of Louis XIV and earned him the nickname of Louis the Great.
