Lot no. 796
FRANCE / CAPETIANS - FRANCE / ROYAL Louis XV (1715-1774). Double sol, known as "au gros L", probably forged in 1742, H, La Rochelle. LUD. XV. D. G. FR. (different) ET. NAV. REX. In the field, L crowned between three lilies 2 and 1. Rv. SIT. NOM. DOM. - BENEDICTUM (date). In the field, cursive L and crossed branch, under a wreath; below (workshop). Dy.1690 - G.281 - Lec.158 - ; Billon - 2,33 g - 23 mm - 6 h With all its silver plating. Superb at Fleur de coin. This specimen presents a variety known as "au gros L et aux grandes couronnes". The difference is a pierced wheel on the right and a cross on the reverse, for a star and a tower according to the archives. This variety is often considered to be a period forgery, but Clairand, 2023, no. 34200 does not mention it and gives it an R2 index [but where would one find an authentic example?], while CGB VSO 13, 2007, no. 1454 states "Faux double sol de billon improperly classified as a double sol au gros L et aux grandes couronnes".
