MG.- - Van Herwijnen and Ilisch, NC (2006), p. 245-249 (4 known examples) ; Silver - 1.51 g - 21.5 mm - 3 h Top Pop: this is the only graded specimen! PCGS VF30 (51871455). Wide flan. With a slight trace of fold, the fields slightly hammered. Light grey patina with golden highlights. Very rare. TTB. Arnulf of Carinthia was an illegitimate son of Carloman, born around 850. He rebelled against his uncle Charles the Fat in 887 and was elected king of East Francia while Eudes took power in West Francia. His dominion also extended to Lotharingia, where he led several campaigns to repel Viking incursions, which were defeated near Leuven in 891. He succeeded in having himself crowned emperor by Pope Formosa in 896 and died in 899. His son Louis IV the Child succeeded him as the last Carolingian king in Germania.
