Ludovic Halévy (1834-1908) was a playwright, librettist of operettas and operas, and novelist. He collaborated on numerous operetta librettos with Léon Battu, Hector Crémieux, and above all Henri Meilhac (1831-1897), with whom he wrote the librettos for Jacques Offenbach's most famous operettas, including La Belle Hélène (1864), La Vie parisienne (1866), La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein (1867) and La Périchole (1869), as well as Georges Bizet's Carmen (1875). He was also the son-in-law of the watchmaker and physicist Louis Breguet.
