The 1904 Gordon-Bennett Cup heats in the Argonne ended with Léon Théry winning in 5 h 20 on a Richard-Brasier car. This was the fifth and penultimate edition of the cup, which was replaced by the Grand Prix of the Automobile Club de France in 1905. The Gordon-Bennett Cup was created in 1899 for a car race in which the winner was the country of the car manufacturer. In 1904, the fifth edition of this race was held in Germany. Enthusiasm was such that France had to choose its drivers from among 29 competitors on the Argonne circuit in the Ardennes, being able to enter only three drivers in three cars. Our medal appears to be attributed to Germain de Mellanville (1874-1915), a sculptor and creator of automobile mascots.
