FRANCE - FRANCE Third Republic (1870-1940). Medal, Orphée ou la Musique, by L. Coudray ND (1899), 1918, Paris. Av. Bust of Orpheus clutching his lyre. A laurel wreath adorns his hair, which is loose and fluttering in the wind. His painful face expresses the despair he feels at the death of Eurydice. Signed L Coudray on the right. Rv. CONSERVATOIRE DE MUSIQUE VANNES. An angel holding a feather and a trumpet looks behind him, a score unrolled on his thigh. He is seated on a cartouche below which a violin is placed on a laurel wreath. Maier 223 - MdP.M.44 (obverse); Silver - 172.6 g - 68 mm - 12 h With its case and attribution to 1er PRIX SOLFÈGE-1918 Mlle DOUILLARD JEANNE. Marked (horn) 1ARGENT on the edge. With a matt grey patina, barely touched on the high points of the relief. Superb at Fleur de coin. This is the most famous medal by Marie-Alexandre-Lucien Coudray (1864-1932), who probably produced it during his stay at the Villa Médicis and sold the rights to the Monnaie de Paris in 1899. More than 4,500 were sold at the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris.
