FRANCE - FRANCE
Third Republic (1870-1940). Pair with 5 centimes with rooster and 10 centimes uniface for Bompas (66), struck in ND gold.

Rv. Within a wreath formed by a laurel branch and a palm, a square with above a rooster to the right for the 5 centimes / Uniface for the 10 centimes.
Elie 10.1 v., 10.2 v., cf. note - Reverse: Maz. cf. 2323-2325 or GEM cf. 261.4; Gold - 9.85 g and 12.3 g - 23 mm and 22.5 mm - 12 h
On a 920‰ Gold blank, without maker's hallmark or guarantee hallmark. The reverse of the 5 centimes was used by Théodore Michelin for his coinage trials in 1892 (GEM cf. 261.4). Hairlines in the fields. Extremely rare if not unique. Superb.
Roland Elie mentions these two strikes in Gold in note in his catalogue of 2003 "known with only one specimen". However, they have appeared in Hans M. F. Schulman auctions in New York: for the 10 centimes in gold, sale of 25 April 1953, No. 584 (appears to be a different example) then sale of 3-4 April 1959, No. 1783 (the same). For the 5 centimes with the rooster, there is a platinum example, Hans M. F. Schulman sale in New York, 16-18 February 1961, no. 2339.
